Boards are smudged and stained. Corners are bumped; cloth is wearing away from the boards. Fore edge is foxed. Binding is square and tight. Black-and-white photographic frontispiece with a tissue guard of a bust titled "George Hamilton". Foxing is present on the frontispiece page but only in the margins. No date on title page. Copyright page dated 1921. Stated first edition. 263 pages plus the last unpaginated page. Interiors are clean and unmarked. 48 portraits. Foxing is present on a handful of but does not inhibit readability or the plates. Overall, a good copy.

A memoir by the Anglo-American artist known for his portraits, figure paintings and illustrations. John McLure Hamilton was born in Philadelphia and studied under Thomas Eakins. He spent nearly 60 years of his life in England where he painted many notables including Henry Irving, George Meredith, Lord Leighton and Richard Vaux. He was William Gladstone's official painter. The book is illustrated with 48 full-page plates including his portrait of Canon Armour. A very good copy with some soiling and edgewear to the covers and some scuffing to the spine. The text is very good with some scattered foxing and some spotting to a few of the plate margins. Foreign postage extra on this heavy book. Inscribed by Author(s).
