Book
hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Acceptable. Spring Books [Published date: 1960]. Hard cover, [57] pp. Good in acceptable dust jacket. Tan cloth covered boards with gold lettering and design on front and spine. Light scuffing, aging and fading to edges of covers. Binding tight. Pages lightly aged but otherwise clean and unmarked. Dust jacket has several 1" or less chips and tears and moderate overall scuffing, with a penny-sized scratched patch on the front cover where a price sticker was removed that took the top layer of color off and heavy scuffing and scratching to the paper over the spine with most of the color scuffed off. Now in an archival-quality (removable) Brodart Cover. NOT Ex-library. NO remainder marks. Includes 24 color detailed tipped-in plates. [From front jacket flap] Pieter Brueghel stands out as the most original and influential figure in Flemish art of the 16th century. Born sometime between 1525 and 1530, he spent some years of his early working life traveling about Italy, as did so many of the Netherlands painters of the period. Unlike the ethers, however, Brueghel did not use his time in Italy to acquire the usual stock of classical and Renaissance motifs. Instead he widened his knowledge and perception of landscape painting, which was to become the subject of many of his most famous works. Brueghel's greatest achievement in landscape painting was a series depicting the months of the year, carried out about 1565. It is uncertain how many of these pictures there were originally. Some authorities say there were twelve and others six. It is certain however that only five are in existence today, and it is one of these, now in the Prague National Gallery, that is the subject of this book. The magnificent plates, taking the painting detail by detail, form a unique study of the painter's method and technique. The introductory text places the work in its it historical background and provides an invaluable guide and commentary not only on this picture in particular, but on the work of Brueghel as a landscape painter.
