Edges foxed, but otherwise a very good copy. Signature of C.H.B. Reynolds on first free endpaper. Illustrated by map. A detailed account of the stages by which Sri Lanka became independent, having been a British Crown Colony, 1802-1928 and a Self-Governing Colony, 1928-1948. Sir Charles Jeffries (1896-1972) was deputy under-secretary of the Colonial Office and was closely associated with the event. Arthur Creech Jones (1891-1964) was Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1946-50. The book is from the library of Dr. Christopher Hanby Baillie Reynolds (1922-2015) noted linguist in the Sinhalese and Maldivian languages, who taught Sinhalese at SOAS, University of London. Bell's work is subtitled "Proofs of design in the animal frame, the perfection of design in the bones of the head, spine, and chest, shown by comparison with architectural and mechanical contrivances". Dr. Wyman's part is subtitled "on the cancelled structure of some of the bones of the human body or of those bones which have a definite relation to the erect position which is naturally assumed by man alone".
