Trattati sulla pittura ve ne sono parecchi di antichi e moderni; quelli antichi, per lo più oscuri e arzigogolati, sono poco pratici; nessun pittore antico si è dato la pena di raccontarci per filo e per segno come eseguiva un quadro, dal modo di preparare la tela o la tavola sino alla vernice finale. Più pratici sono i trattati moderni; i migliori, secondo me, sono quelli tedeschi; ma anche lì ci si affanna parecchio sin da cavarci qualcosa che possa realmente essere utile all'esecuzione d'un quadro; ciò dipende dal fatto che per la maggior parte tali trattati sono scritti da restauratori, quindi da gente che, per quanto in fatto di tecnica la sappia più lunga di molti pittori, pure considera detta tecnica da un punto di vista affatto speciale così che spesso si diffonde in discorsi eruditi e pieni d'interesse ma che poco insegnano al pittore avido di sapere qualcosa di pratico che lo aiuti nella delicata e grave fatica di menare il pennello sulla tela. Non ho la pretenzione di colmare, con il presente volumetto, tali lacune [.] mi sono accinto a raccontare quello che so, quello che ho imparato con la mia esperienza personale.
