Illustrated DJ is nice and bright, but has pieces of tape here and there over tears. Now protected in a mylar sleeve. Cover is vibrant with minimal wear. There are some very subtle water stains on the boards near the spine, and remnants of a sticker that is mostly worn off from the bottom right corner of the back cover. Binding is strong. No date on title page, copyright page dated 1942. Unpaginated. Previous owner's name written in ink in several places on the front endpaper. Traces of tape can be seen in a few places on the front and back endpapers. Pages are clean and unmarked. Overall free of tears, folds, or bumps. Vintage children's book features large black, white, and red illustrations throughout. Published during World War II, it may come as no surprise that the rear flap of the DJ implores readers to buy War Bonds and Stamps.

Scarce & unique contribution to African-American literature, being one of the first books (in 1942) to picture a Black Santa Claus & a large cast of black characters (though they do all speak in dialect, are illustrated with what are now considered stereotypical caricatures, & the story resorts to standardized tropes involving white beneficence & largess). Beloved by children of all races to whom it was read by their teachers, it is a lovely story about family, community, & encouraging young talent. In 44 pages, unpaginated, this is a FIRST EDITION, First Printing, from 1942. Hardcover octvo (7.75" x 9.25") has orange cloth-covered boards stamped with black-brown illustration & lettering to front cover. Condition is VG: light surface soiling & rubbing to extremities, bumping to corners & both ends of spine, with slight cloth fraying. Stitched binding is secure, but loosening, front hinge starting. Stereotypical but relatively benign wartime children's book about a young Black boy with a beautiful voice who doesn't believe in Santa Claus. He goes on an adventure and finds out differently.
