Édition originale posthume de cette traduction française de la Bible établie par Charles le Cene, théologien huguenot. Vignettes de titre gravées par Peter Yver. Émigré aux Provinces-Unies puis en Angleterre suite à la révocation de l'édit de Nantes, Charles Le Cène fait paraître à Rotterdam, en 1696, son Projet d'une nouvelle version françoise de la Bible (correspondant à la première partie du présent volume) ; critique des traductions existantes, et notamment de la Geneva Bible, Le Cène propose plusieurs interprétations alternatives fortement marquées par le socinianisme. Jacques Gousset en fait paraître une violente réfutation sous le titre Considérations théologiques et critiques sur le Projet d'une nouvelle version françoise de la Bible (Amsterdam, 1698), mais l'ouvrage suscite malgré tout l'intérêt : une traduction anglaise (quelque peu infidèle) paraît en 1701, et versions anglaise comme française sont réimprimées. Il faudra toutefois attendre 1741 ? soit 38 ans après la mort de Le Cène ? pour voir paraître sa traduction dans son intégralité. Elle est publiée par son fils, Michel-Charles Le Cène, imprimeur établi à Amsterdam. Dénoncé par l'église d'Utrecht, l'ouvrage fut, au bout de deux jours de délibérations, déclaré hérétique par le synode des églises wallonnes de La Brille. Il existe des exemplaires ornés d'un portrait frontispice du traducteur par François-Morellon de La Cave. Delaveau et Hillard, n°547.
