Il fit "la guerre en Piémont sous Brissac, fut chargé par le cardinal de Lorraine d'importantes missions en Écosse, auprès de Marie Stuart, fiancée au dauphin (depuis François II), puis en Angleterre, auprès d'Élisabeth ; remplit plusieurs ambassades en Allemagne, dans les Pays-Bas, en Savoie et à Rome, où il contribua à l'élection de Pie IV. De retour en France, il découvrit les premiers indices de la conjuration d'Amboise et les communiqua aux ministres.
