David Kraslow graduated from the University of Miami (Fla.) and was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. He joined the Miami Herald in 1948, reported sports and city and county government, winning two state awards, before moving to the Washington Bureau in 1956. Stuart H. Loory graduated from Cornell University and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, where he won a Pulitzer Traveling Scholarship." The Secret Search for Peace in Vietnam (1968) by David Kraslow and Stuart H. Loory documents failed, covert attempts by U.S. and world leaders to end the Vietnam War between 1965 and 1968. The book highlights missed opportunities caused by poor communication, distrust, and the inability to align military actions with diplomatic efforts, notably during the "Marigold" initiative. The Secret Search for Peace in Vietnam is a seminal journalistic account detailing failed, covert U.S. and international efforts to negotiate an end to the Vietnam War between 1965 and 1968. It highlights missed opportunities, such as the Polish-Italian "Marigold" initiative, often sabotaged by bombing raids, mistrust, and poor communication. The "Marigold" Initiative (1966 was a key, failed effort involving Polish and Italian diplomats trying to connect Washington and Hanoi directly. Critics, as detailed in the book, suggested the Johnson administration frequently undermined potential breakthroughs by escalating bombing campaigns just as negotiations seemed promising. Various international actors attempted to bridge the gap between U.S. goals (containing communism) and North Vietnamese demands (withdrawal of U.S. troops). Kraslow and Loory argued that the lack of coordination between military action and diplomatic efforts was a primary reason for the prolonged conflict. The book remains a critical, contemporary look at the behind-the-scenes failures that extended the war.
