Sí, ¡vaya usted a hablar con un comisario del orden público de voces cósmicas, de murmullos y destellos!» Cuando en 1946 se publicó "Ladrones de bicicletas", poco podía imaginar Luigi Bartolini que su libro inspiraría la célebre película homónima de Vittorio de Sica, convertida con el paso de los años en el emblema del neorrealismo italiano y en una de las más recordadas del pasado siglo. En las páginas de este libro transcurre el relato original del periplo por las calles de Roma que Bartolini protagonizó a su pesar, en los días inmediatamente posteriores a la ocupación alemana, movido por la obstinada determinación de atrapar al ladrón de su bicicleta y recuperarla «en unos tiempos en que abundan las víctimas de robos que dejan correr sus bicicletas con otras piernas y no pierden el tiempo buscándolas». Hábil transeúnte de los barrios y viejas calles de la capital de Italia, Bartolini ofrece en "Ladrones de bicicletas" un retrato de sus menos honestos conciudadanos lleno de humor y amargura, mientras se encomienda con vehemencia a la épica misión de reparar por sus propios medios la tropelía de la que ha sido víctima sólo una entre las muchas que la autoridad romana consiente a diario. Pronto constatará que los ladrones romanos, muy alejados de los «queridos ladrones» de Verlaine, se aplican con eficacia a una labor para la que cuentan con el favor de comerciantes, prostitutas, usureros y hasta policías, y constituyen el fenómeno más incordiante de unos tiempos material y moralmente miserables. *** Nota: Los envíos a España peninsular, Baleares y Canarias se realizan a través de mensajería urgente.
