vi, 451 - 556 pp. Numerous full page advertisments interspersed. 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" Started in 1923 as a monthly journal under the editorship of J. M. Murry, intended as a mouthpiece for D. H. Lawrence and himself. From 1927 it became a quarterly entitled the New Adelphi. Murry's editorship ended with a D. H. Lawrence memorial number in 1930, and the periodical became the Adelphi, incorporating the New Adelphi, which ran until 1955. Contributors to the three series include W. B. Yeats, T. S. Eliot, A. Bennett, H. G. Wells, Day-Lewis, Orwell, and Auden. (The Concise Oxford Companion to English Literature. Ed. Margaret Drabble and Jenny Stringer. Oxford university Press, 2007). Spine sun-tanned. Cover and edges slightly foxed. Very Good. Printed pale yellow paper wrappers.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. A scarce early copy of The Adelphi, including an essay by DH Lawrence (Indians and an Englishman), a translation by DH Lawrence of Giovanni Verga's story Across the Sea, 10 poems by Katherine Mansfield, three poems by Anna Akhmatova, seven letters by Chekhov to Gorki, and a piece by William Gerhardi called Mr Lawrence and the Wreck of the Love-Service. Other pieces reflect upon Lawrence's recently published novel Kangaroo and the tales in The Ladybird ("astonishing and poetic"). The magazine itself, being nearly 100 years old, has collected a number of spots at the very back and the front, otherwise it's quite lightly spotted and in some places not at all, and it's spotted around the edges of the pages. There's no other markings to the text. The spine is creased, but the binding is still holding up well. The covers are clearly shelfworn and handled, for example around the edges and at the top and bottom of the spine. Just to the rear of the top of the spine, there's a small patch missing, about half a centimetre by half a centimetre. There's 110 pages in the magazine, with a good array of interesting adverts (such as The Labour Monthly touting Trotsky on 'Man does not live by politics alone') and other features such as a piece by Murry called On Tolstoi and Other Things. "What that man knew and told in War and Peace is so tremendous that we are left wondering at what he knew and did not tell." Some photos of this copy of The Adelphi to come soon.
