An unusual plea for help from an optometrist to Dr. Milton V. Kline, a pioneer in hypnotherapy: "I have been studying all the literature I can get my hands on, in a…search for some information as to what can be done in the field of orthoptics with the help of hypnosis." He expresses surprise for a rather unexpected reason: "This does not make sense to me, since almost all visual 'disorders' are a very simple form of hysteria, involving some type of manifestation of a defense mechanism." He gives strabismus (improper alignment of the eyes) and amblyopia (a.k.a. "lazy eye") as examples. Dr. Graham closes his letter with a request for any assistance on the topic that Dr. Kline (co-founder of the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis; Director and founder of the Institute for Research in Hypnosis and Psychotherapy; and author of many books and papers on the topic) can offer. An interesting mid-Century medical request, linking "hysteria" with certain problems of the eye.
