Contemporary half-parchment binding with gilt morocco spine label; XV, [1], 318; 231, [1]; 57, [3] pp. with engraved frontispiece and 10 folded copperplate engravings by Cosimo Mogalli after drawings by Alessandro Saller, and numerous decorative woodcut and engraved initials, chapter headpieces, and endpieces. Very good save for a few minor repairs and small tears on the folded panels. First edition of the comprehensive history of the Medici "Family Madonna." The richly illustrated work was printed two years after one of the most splendid votive processions, documented in the folding plates (69 × 49 cm), in which the image attributed to the Evangelist St. Luke was brought to Florence in an effort to prevent the extinction of the Medici dynasty. It was of no avail, however, with the prayers remaining unanswered. The son of Cosimo III, Gian Gastone, died without issue, bringing the Florentine ruling dynasty to an end in 1737. It evokes the words of Mary in the Magnificat: "He has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty." This association is suggested not least by the fact that, before the rule of the Medici, the icon was venerated by the populace as the "Regina Repubblicana." Following the failure of the theocratic state proclaimed by Savonarola and the return of the exiled banking family to the Arno, the cult surrounding the panel outside the city gates was redirected. Yet even before this, the Medici had sought, through endowments, to bind the image to themselves. As he had done for the miraculous fresco in the Santissima Annunziata, Florence, Piero di Cosimo de' Medici commissioned the architect and sculptor Michelozzo to construct, among other things, a separate chapel in the form of an aedicule for the icon. Luca della Robbia also participated in its decoration with glazed terracotta figures. The present volume accordingly opens with an engraving of the Renaissance altar endowed by the Medici. Remarkably, the icon itself is not shown. Although the tabernacle housing the panel is open, a richly ornamented textile conceals the image from our view. The marble relief below on the altar frontal (attributed, among others, to Luca della Robbia, Michelozzo, and Filarete), however, succinctly recounts that part of the legend of the miraculous image concerning the construction of the church. In the background, a ruin and two oxen appear. According to the legend, the former parish church was to be built at another location. Yet the walls erected during the day repeatedly collapsed at night. It was resolved to entrust the choice of the site for the future basilica to God's hands. The stones were loaded onto a cart drawn by two oxen, in the hope that the animals would stop at the place where construction could succeed. In the foreground of the relief, the oxen kneel before a pit in the ground, from which an icon protrudes. A chronicle relates how the excavation of the foundations was begun after the oxen had knelt down at the site. After the first stroke of the spade, a lamenting voice was heard, and when they continued digging, they eventually came upon the icon, the future object of veneration. The image, said to have been painted by the Evangelist Luke, was reportedly brought to Tuscany by Saint Romulus of Fiesole, a disciple of the Apostle Peter, when fleeing there.
