Uomo di scienza e di lettere, Montalbani pare inverare, nel tessuto del proprio tempo, la possibile giunzione delle "due culture" nell'età della rivoluzione scientifica. Prosecutore dell'opera naturalistica di Ulisse Aldrovandi, Montalbani ricopre la cattedra di medicina a Bologna, e in questo ruolo redige un «tacuino» annuale di predizioni astrologiche; egli compila così, sotto la «dettatura delle stelle», regolari pronostici. Di questi vaticinii i Discorsi risultano l'appendice trattatistica nella forma di dissertazioni di carattere monografico, e sono raggruppati, nella presente edizione - la prima dopo quelle apparse singulatim anno per anno nel Seicento - secondo la partizione degli elementi, che valgono anche come criterio di suddivisione dei segni zodiacali. Dai Discorsi di Montalbani emerge la sua curiositas barocca verso le scienze naturali: uno sguardo che porta a tutto vedere e inventariare nelle forme dell'enumerazione, e che similmente si ritrova nelle raccolte di reperti naturali dei contemporanei, tra i quali il linceo Cassiano dal Pozzo, Ulisse Aldrovandi, dove la classificazione non cristallizza il senso del movimento del reale, l'immaginario dell'epoca essendo appunto dominato da una «cinegetica dell'immagine» (Calcaterra). L?attenzione alla realtà bolognese è evidente anche negli scritti relativi al tema linguistico e dialettologico e quest?opera ne è l?esempio. Sul frontespizio timbro di possesso di Gustavo Camillo Galletti (1805-1868) bibliofilo e collezionista librario di nobile famiglia. Riunì la sua importante raccolta acquisendo intere biblioteche di illustri bibliofili, come ad esempio quella del marchese Riccardi Vernaccia e quella dell'abate Tommaso Gelli. Nel 1879, buona parte della sua collezione venne acquisita dal barone e banchiere di origine ebraico-ucraina, collezionista e bibliofilo, Horace de Landau (1824-1903). Raccolse nella sua villa "La Pietra" a Firenze una delle più importanti biblioteche private. Nel 1879 acquisì circa due terzi della citata biblioteca del Conte Galletti. Questo nucleo venne ulteriormente ampliato dalle collezioni di Jenny Ellemberger (1850-1938) moglie di Hugo Finaly (1844-1915) e nipote del barone Landau da cui ereditò la preziosa raccolta di manoscritti, incunaboli e cinquecentine. Il desiderio da lei sovente espresso di donare i suoi beni librari alla città di Firenze venne esaudito dal figlio Horace Finaly e dai suoi eredi. L'avvocato Piero Calamandrei fu legale rappresentante degli esecutori testamentari mentre Giovanni Poggi, Tammaro De Marinis e Filippo Serlupi Crescenzi ebbero dagli eredi il mandato di liquidare l'intera eredità.
