Internally fine; presentation plate and date 1929 to paste down [which may be the date of the binding]; all edges gilt. A most handsome copy of these famous works in lovely condition and with some fine illustrations.

Illustrated with frontispiece and four plates. Collated complete. A detailed study into the history of Kirkstall Abbey, a ruined Cistercian monastery in north-west Leeds. Founded circa 1152, it was disestablished during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII. This work also addresses changes to the site being made at the point of writing. Illustrated by William Mulready, an Irish painter known for his romantic depictions of rural scenes, and Charles Cope, an English painter of historic scenes and an etcher. Rebacked in full green crushed morocco. Externally, sound with rubbing resulting in light loss to the extremities. Fading to the spine and marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Light age toning to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscriptions to the front endpaper. A tear to the rear endpaper. Good. book.
