Hardcover. Condition: vg. Third edition. Quarto. (100)pp., unpaginated. Dark blue and light green cloth with lovely blue and green design incorporating the Star of David, the tablets of Ten Commandments, a rose bush with the title in white. Light blue lettering on spine. Thick, blue endpapers decorated with menorahs. Illustrated half-title printed in black and orange. Title page with illustrated framing and printed in orange and black. Entire work is lavishly illustrated from cover to cover with breathtaking b/w illustrations of biblical scenes by Ephraim Mose Lilien, including several full page illustrations, accompanied by Münchhausen poetry based on biblical narratives. Text in German, Gothic script. Age wear on spine, head and tail of spine chipped. Small dealer sticker on back free endpaper. Binding with very light wear and lightly rubbed. The artist of the illustrations, Ephraim Moses Lilien was an influential and famous Jewish artist. The author of the poetry, Börries von Münchhausen (1874 - 1945) was a monastery educated German poet. While he was still a student, he composed a number of ballads and published his first collection of poetry in 1898. He harked back to the German Romantic poets' fascination with the Middle Ages and the world of German legend. Münchhausen thus contributed decisively to the 20th century revival of the ballad, the genre which he encouraged in other writers, notably Lulu von Strauß und Torney and Agnes Miegel, whose first ballads he edited.
