Originally published in 1974 as Beware, Beware the Bight of Benin. Cover painting is of a River Class Destroyer at Speed by Wilkinson 1907. Tight, bright book with no marks or stamps and a faultless interior. Its the 1890s. Royal Navy lieutenant St Vincent Halfhyde finds himself out of favor with the Navy and on half-pay ashore when he is summoned to the Admiralty. His mission: to sail to the Bight of Benin in West Africa and spy on the not-so-secret Russian presence there. As a Russian speaker who is familiar with Benin, Hallhyde is confident he's the man for the job -- until he runs into Admiral Prince Gorsinski, cousin of the Czar and Halfhyde's former jailer. Aided only by an eager midshipman and a company of Russian mutineers, Halfhyde must face flogging, malaria, and the smothering embrace of a former lover to foil Gorsinski and seize the day for Britain. It seemed an idyllic tourist setting in the small town in the Southeast corner of France where Neil Bowman had come to await the arrival of the gypsies. Each year for centuries the gathering of those mysterious people from as far away as Transylvania and the shores of the Black Sea had added an extra splash of color and excitement to the local countryside, as they came to venerate the relics of their patron saint. This time however the annual pilgrimage concealed something far more sinister, bristling with violence and danger, as Bowman soon discovered when his curiosity led to a nearly fatal encounter in the grim limestone caves outside of town. Almost before he knew it he was on the run; the only question was who was pursuing whom: the gypsies, or Bowman and the attractive young English girl he had taken with him? The book jacket shows some wear and has a small tear on the front bottom edge. There is a nameplate of the previous owner with their name and date on the front inside board. The book has rough deckled page edges. The pages are clear of any markings or highlighting.
