Exemplar com dedicatória de Pedro António [?] ao Conselheiro José Marcelino da Costa Monteiro, em letra de meados do Século XIX, no verso da folha de rosto e carimbo oleográfico de posse, na folha de rosto, com a assinatura do Dr. José de Jesus Coelho do Valle, Médico-cirurgião. 1ª Edição rara por ter o retrato do autor e a bela planta de grandes dimensões. Obra escrita pelo autor quando esteve exilado em Londres, depois de ter sido preso em Portugal sob acusações de colaboração com o invasor Francês, e ter conseguido fugir a bordo de um navio inglês. A intenção com que escreveu estas memórias, cujos exemplares distribuiu pelos amigos, foi registar os acontecimentos que tinha testemunhado ou em que tinha participado e rebater as acusações de traição, que o obrigaram a sair do país. Uma das mais importantes fontes para o conhecimento do Portugal Pombalino e dos acontecimentos subsequentes até às invasões francesas, principalmente sobre as reformas do Marquês, as actividades comerciais, a política, as obras públicas e a vida em sociedade, incluindo apreciações sobre as qualidade e o caracter das personagens mais notáveis das classes dirigentes. Written by the author while in exile in London, after being arrested in Portugal on charges of collaborating with the French invader, and managing to escape on board an English ship. The purpose of writing these memoirs, copies of which he distributed to friends, was to record the events he had witnessed or participated in, and to refute the accusations of treason that forced him to leave the country. One of the most important sources for the knowledge of Pombaline Portugal and subsequent events until the French invasions, mainly on the reforms of the Marquis, commercial activities, politics, public works and life in society, including appreciations of the quality and character of the most outstanding characters of the ruling classes. The book is structured into a foreword, 79 chapters, accompanied by a transcript of 15 documents that the author says provide evidence for his assertions, and a detailed table of contents.
