Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. This 728 page book has numerous engravings, some with spotting. There is foxing and a small stain at the bottom of the title page. The marbleized fep has come loose, but is still present. There is no date of publication for the London, George Virtue edition, but suspect it is mid 1880s. The spine on the black leather cover is a little loose and there is edge wear at the spine ends and extremities. It is fair plus. Because of its weight and size, a bit more than the usual $4,25 will be needed for postage.

Binding at top of spine shows splitting and a very small piece is missing. Pages are yellowed, but very readable with engravings throughout. Front of back board appears to have a black leather piece adhered tightly to it, showing multiple lovely gilt images. Name of previous owner and pencil markings on the second page. Contemporary full-leather with modern spine replacement, but with the original gilt stamped spine label, 358 printed pages complete with all 30 engravings which have been checked against the "Directions to the Binder" list at the rear and all are correct as list. Measures approximately 8.5 x 10.5 inches. Condition: Rubbed to the leather, inscription to the front free end paper (for some reason it is upside down), missing the rear end paper, small hole to the top corner of the first blank page, small insect damage hole towards the lower inner margin of the first section of pages (not affecting the text), some foxing and browning to the first and last few pages and further occasional foxing and browning.

All of the pages are intact and the cover is intact and the spine may show signs of wear. The book may have minor markings which are not specifically mentioned. A good condition antique book. A slightly later reprint. An ex-library rebind into quarter leather marbled boards with the usual amount of stamps. Heavy chipping to the board edges and general scuffing, fading and cracking to the covers and spine, but this still remains a sturdy book and isn't poor when considering it's age. Heavy toning and dust to the textblock edges and foxing to the contents, but the faces are fully intact and securely bound. Fine overall for being over 2 centuries old.

Edges scuffed, gilt decorations on spine have mostly worn off, and back edge of spine starting to split (covers remain attached). A rip at the head of the spine has been glued back down. Early owners' signatures on front endpapers. Lots of small stains and fingerprint smudges throughout the text, which is otherwise unmarked. Page 157-158 is detached but present. Blank page preceding the ads is torn at the top. Binding is a bit limp due to many years of handling. Much-used but readable. This 19th-century edition is undated, but likely from around the 1850s, and illustrated with occasional hand-colored plates.
