L'idea fondante di questa disciplina è quella di unificare l'approccio fisico e matematico al trasporto di quantità di moto, energia e massa, descrivendoli nei termini di flussi convettivi e flussi diffusivi. Questi ultimi, a loro volta, sono legati alla forza motrice che li determina, cioè ai gradienti di velocità, energia interna e potenziale chimico, attraverso delle diffusività, che misurano la resistenza del sistema, cioè la sua riluttanza ad abbandonare l'equilibrio termodinamico, dove i gradienti suddetti sono nulli. Queste resistenze sono responsabili del carattere irreversibile del trasporto di quantità di moto, calore e massa e prendono il nome di viscosità, conducibilità termica e diffusività massica, rispettivamente. Dal momento che esistono in commercio numerosi manuali di fenomeni di trasporto, viene spontaneo chiedersi che bisogno c'era di svilupparne un altro. La risposta a questa domanda è che, a differenza della quasi totalità dei manuali apparsi degli ultimi 50 anni, in questo libro di testo i processi sono prima descritti da un punto di vista macroscopico e fenomenologico, e solo in un secondo tempo si derivano i bilanci microscopici, sviluppando i modelli matematici che ne permettono la soluzione.
