ROLLER, Duane H. D. THE DE MAGNETE OF WILLIAM GILBERT. Amsterdam: Menno Hertzberger, 1959. 196 pp. 4to., green cloth with gilt spine lettering. Spine slightly sunned, else a fine copy. One of the earliest works on magnetism, originally published in 1600. Gilbert (1544-1603) studied at Cambridge and practiced medicine in London before becoming physician to Elizabeth I. His De Magnete made the lodestone a thing of magic no longer; Gilbert's work (which included the introduction of the term "electric") helped develop magnetic compasses for navigation and laid the foundation for work by Galileo and Kepler, and reinforced the Copernican theory.
