As hopefully some of you will have seen, I am currently listing a whole series of vintage and collectible books acquired from the estate of a college professor who much appreciated science and technology classics. This is another in that thematic group (of which there are many, perhaps 30+), this one titled: Mechanical Properties of Matter, by S. G. Starling. This small hard cover book (5 ½ x 8 inches, 336 pages + 1 page of publisher s adverts) was published by Macmillan and Co. Limited, of London, dated 1937 (the First Edition was 1936 and this is a reprint with additions, (so stated). The book is bound in dark blue textured cloth with gilt titles on the spine, and amazingly enough, still protected by a printed paper dust jacket. The book is very well illustrated with in-text figures demonstrating the calculations being discussed and other things. Condition: This book is in very good condition. As mentioned, it still has the original paper dust jacket (from 1937) although it is showing a bit of wear, including small chips and tears on the edges, particularly at the spine tips, and some darkening as well. The dust jacket is price-clipped. The hard covers are perhaps a bit dust-dulled but generally clean and with just one small, rubbed spot on the rear gutter. Inside, the book has a former owner s inked name on the front endpaper and I also did find one slight blemish (p. 203) where someone s ink pen touched the page and made a small mark. Otherwise, the interior pages are clean and bright throughout, with no real age-toning and certainly no foxing. Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding thus seems tight, sound and square. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
