Condition: Poor. Boston 1814 1st Rowe and Hooper. Pronounced at St.Petersburg in honor of General Moreau Translated from the French to English. Jean Victor Moreau, b. 1763, had an interesting life. He was a French soldier of Revolutionary and Napoleonic armies until 1800 when he headed a Republican and Royalist conspiracy against Napoleon and was exiled. He then lived near Trenton, New Jersey, from 1805-13, when he entered the Russian service (!) and was killed at the Battle of Dresden in August, 1813. Hardcover. 12mo., 156pp., marbled boards with later paper spine. Ink numbers on spine. Poor, opens to title page which has a few tears (one taped), numerous ink numbers and one signature in ink, some water staining throughout, final leaf chipped and missing a few words, tearing along outer hinge.

Brown paper boards with leather spine have rubbed and bumped corners and edges with some leather cracking and chipping at spine tail. Front board starting. Part of front pastedown endpaper is peeled off. A bookplate is on the front pastedown and another previous owner's name is inscribed on the rear pastedown. Foxing throughout. Pavel Petrovich Svinin (or Svinyin) , here listed as author Paul Svinine, was a Russian painter and writer not known for accurate accounts. "Charged to accompany the General on the continent," he was aide-de-camp to General Jean Victor Marie Moreau, a former supporter of Napoleon and later advisor in the Prussian and Austrian war against Napoleon in 1813. Svinin was present at Moreau's death from wounds inflected at the Battle of Dresden. The appendix of letters contains one from Moreau and a correspondence between Madames Moreau and Bonaparte while Napoleon was in power. ; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 107 pp.

The subject of this volume is Jean Victor Marie Moreau (1763-1813), a French General under Napoleon Bonaparte, who was banished from France in 1803. He arrived in New York City in 1805 and settled near the Delaware River in northern New Jersey. In 1813 he returned to Europe and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Dresden in August 1813. Very scarce. In Very Good- Condition: lacking much of paper over spine; boards are lightly soiled and rubbed with some loss of paper; light foxing throughout, heavier on title page and a few other pages; otherwise clean and tight.

Moreau was originally an ally of Napoleon and helped him gain power, though later in life he became a rival and was banished to the United States of America.The scarce first edition of this work.Containing a frontispiece portrait of Moreau.Including a biographical sketch by Paul Svinine.In contemporary full calf binding. In full contemporary calf binding. Externally, some light rubbing to the joints and spine, with a very small amount of loss to the binding on the spine. Joints are strained, particularly the front joint. Internally, hinges are tender, though remaining binding is firm. Some offsetting to the title page, though remaining pages are generally bright and clean, especially considering the age of the work. Good. book.
