RARE Publisher book samples, typically include the front/back covers, table of contents, and some internal content to showcase tone, style, and content. These samples are used by publishers for marketing, and in the 19th century often were used to acquire subscribers prior to publication that enabled the publisher to better gage the potential market when the work was published. John Sherman's Recollections of Forty Years in the House, Senate and Cabinet is a two-volume autobiography published in 1896 by American politician John Sherman (18231900). It details his extensive career in government, covering the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Panic of 1873, along with insights into contemporaries like Lincoln and Grant. Covers forty years of political service, spanning his time in the House of Representatives, the Senate, and as a Cabinet Secretary. Detailed accounts of the political climate in the late 19th century, including financial policies, Civil War, and his role in the Republican Party. Provides personal insights into his life, upbringing, and political beliefs. The work is considered a valuable first-hand account of American political history during a critical era. From the late 16th to the 19th centuries, books were published by subscription in English-speaking areas including Britain, Ireland, and British America. Subscriptions were an alternative to the prevailing mode of publication, whereby booksellers would buy authors' manuscripts outright and produce and sell books on their own initiative. The subscription model was not common and books published using the model were often about specialist subjects. Nineteenth-century publishing by subscription was a predominant, risk-mitigating model where readers pre-ordered books, often paying half in advance, to finance production before final delivery. Common for expensive, multi-volume, or niche works, this method bypassed traditional bookstores, using door-to-door agents and, frequently, listing subscriber names to boost sales and prestige. Publishers or agents distributed proposals (prospectuses) to gauge interest and secure orders, often printing the book only if enough subscribers signed up. Subscribers typically paid half upfront and the remainder upon receiving the completed work. Particularly in America, agents known as "canvassers" were vital to selling books (such as histories, or novels) directly to homes, keeping these volumes out of retail shops. This model allowed publishers to shift risks, catered to readers without access to bookstores, and rewarded subscribers by sometimes listing their names in the book. By the end of the century, this model supported the rise of mass-circulation magazines and books, particularly as printing and transport technology became more widespread. John Sherman (May 10, 1823 October 22, 1900) was an American politician from Ohio who served in federal office throughout the Civil War and into the late nineteenth century. A member of the Republican Party, he served in both houses of the U.S. Congress. He also served as Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of State. Sherman sought the Republican presidential nomination three times, coming closest in 1888, but was never chosen by the party. Between 1861 and 1897, John Sherman served in the U.S. Senate for nearly 32 years and holds the record for longest serving senator from the state of Ohio (18611877; 18811897). Sherman moved to Mansfield, Ohio, where he began a law career before entering politics. He was the younger brot.
