Leather. Condition: Good. Not Stated (illustrator). A lovely copy of the Carmine edition of Richard Harris Barham's popular collection of fantastical short stories, illustrated throughout. Carmine edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece, title vignette, and sixteen plates. Collated complete. A delightful collection of whimsical legends, myths, and ghost stories written supposedly by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually the pen-name of clergyman Richard Harris Barham. The legends were first printed in 1837 as a regular series in magazine 'Bentley's Miscellany', and due to their popularity were compiled and published in book form. Although based on real legends and mythology, they are deliberately humorous parodies of medieval folklore and poetry. The work proved immensely popular and has been referenced in literary works by H.G. Wells, Henry James, and Rudyard Kipling. Dated from the British Library. Bound in full crushed morocco with gilt. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spine. Minor cracks to the joints with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting. A contemporary ink inscription and the bookseller's blind stamp to the front endpaper. Good. book.
