Il fut l'un des premiers disciples de Broca. En 1876, il est nommé professeur à l'École d'anthropologie, tout juste fondée par son maître, puis directeur du Laboratoire d'anthropologie à l'École pratique des hautes études. Ses recherches ont abouti à aux magistraux Éléments d'anthropologie générale (1885), traduits dans plusieurs langues. Bien que désuets sur certains aspects, ses travaux sont encore consultées aujourd'hui, principalement ceux qui concernent l'anthropologie somatique. Bon exemplaire.
