A further 500 copies in the total limitation of 600 copies were printed on Plate paper. The 100 copies have an extra illustration bound in before the title page. The first edition was published in 1814. There are two title pages, one in English and one in French. Descriptions of the plates are also printed in the two languages. The plates are all in colour. Of note is what is thought to be the first illustration of a steam train. The settings of the plates are of interest as much as the costume itself. Original cream parchment covers with title (stating forty-one engravings) in gilt to cover and spine. The book has been professionally rebound with new endpapers and cloth strips to the gutters. The edges are rubbed with soiling to the covers. A short tear to the foot of the spine has been repaired. There is a very small tear at the head. Internally there is foxing to the free blank endpaper The title pages and early pages are foxed and the last few pages similarly. In between, there is lighter foxing to the margins, mainly towards the fore-edge. Tanning to the text of some pages facing the plates. The plates are NOT affected. Elephant folio.
