Palazzo Vecchio, which towers over piazza della Signoria, at the center of Florence, is an iconic building and from the Middle Ages to the Medici family to present day it has been the seat of civic power. Among its most admired features are the marvelous grotesque decorations which animate the walls and vaults of the courtyard and several rooms. Grotesques are a type of wall decoration, in stucco or fresco, often with the addition of gold, that developed in the Renaissance when the vaults of the Domus Aurea in Rome, which were underground (considered grottos hence the name), were rediscovered by artists who drew inspiration from those designs. Palazzo Vecchio's grotesques are lively, extravagant ornaments, generated by the creativity of artists--among whom Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio (1483-1561) and Marco Marchetti da Faenza (ca. 1526-1588) stand out--and they include, birds, flowers, vegetation and many strange creatures that have a mixture of human and animal traits. An adequate theory of nominalization should explicate rigorously how nominals of the types in (1) are related to sentential construction (2), and should also account for their distributional differences and meaning differences. The task of this book is to develop such a theory. I defend two main theses. The first is that, in order to provide an adequate semantics for the nominals in (1), one needs to distinguish among three types of entities in the domain of discourse (in addition to the type of ordinary individuals): events, propositions, and states xiii XIV PREFACE of affairs. I argue that the nominals in (1) differ in their ability to denote entities of these types and that predicates differ in their ability to select for them.

Summary Several studies have been devoted to the flowering of the republic of Genoa during the so-called 'siglo de los Genoveses', when Genoa became the hub of European trade and an important center of artistic and literary production. Yet, little attention has been granted to the political and cultural crisis that followed, starting in 1559 and culminating in 1684, when the French bombed Genoa. Addressing this chronological gap, the volume explores how the image of the Genoese Republic was shaped, exploited, or contested in the long seventeenth century. How did Genoese politicians and men of letters represent their homeland? How was Genoa represented in Spain or in the Low Countries? How was its political system conceived by Italian and foreign political writers, and how did the prevailing absolutist model influence such ideas? In order to answer these questions, the volume gathers contributions from art historians, literary scholars, political and cultural historians, thus adopting a comparative, multidisciplinary approach.
