Pages 119-158 are business adverts for Memhpis. An scarce and interesting ledger detailing businesses expenses and gains in Memphis from 1880-1883. Most of the contents deal with the cotton trade, rules and regulations of cotton and the byproducts (cottonseed cake and oil). The resilience of Memphis as a center of trade on the Mississippi cannot be overshadowed by the fact that, 4 years prior, the city was hit by a yellow fever epidemic. This resulting in the population of Memphis dwindling to 19000 inhabitants, the majority of whom were blacks. This discrepancy in the white population allowed blacks to hold positions normally restricted to blacks, i.e. police officers, firemen, etc. So many people died or fled the epidemics that in 1879 Memphis lost its city charter and went bankrupt. Until 1893 Memphis was governed by the state as a Taxing District. Signed.
