Condition: New. xxvii +322pp,portraits,plates, illustrations,11 coloured plates, including 9 of uniform & 2 of colours.2001 N&MP Reprint of Original EditionPublished Price £24.95 This regimental history is a revision and continuation up to 1910 of the printed Historical Record of the 17th Foot, published in 1848, by Richard Cann…on of the War Office. Cannon produced a series of regimental histories in the mid-nineteenth century. The regiment was raised in 1688 by Colonel Solomon Richards for King James II, but a year later allegiance was switched to William III; its first Battle Honour was Namur, in 1695. The regiment was in N America during the War of Independence, then it was sent to the W Indies in the Wars of the French Revolution. In 1804 it went to India where it remained for twenty years, gaining several battle honours. In 1825 King George IV approved of the regiment âbearing on its colours and appointments the figure of the âRoyal Tigerâ with the word âHindoostanâ superscribed, as a lasting testimony of the exemplary conduct of the corps during the period of its service in India, from 1804 to 1823.â Hence the regimental nickname âThe Tigers.â It was in the Crimea for 18 months from the end of 1854, and at the Siege of Redan Cpl Philip Smith became the first member of the regiment to receive the newly instituted Victoria Cross. In 1858 the 2nd Battalion was raised, though there had been a 2nd Battalion for three short years, 1799 to 1802. The 1st Battalion saw service in the Boer War. The story ends in 1910 with the 1st Battalion in Aldershot with a strength of 801 all ranks, the 2nd was in India (1,031 all ranks) where it had been adjudged the âbest regiment at armsâ (British regiments) at the 6th Divisional Assault at Arms, Poona. The final chapter is devoted to uniforms, equipment and the Colours (of the eleven colour plates two depict the Colours and the rest uniforms). Appendices list the succession of Colonels and give biographical details; give an account of the Siege of Londonderry in 1689 and the Battle of Sherriffmuir in 1715 and details of regimental silver and regimental music.

Condition: Good (+) for age and genre. 1st ed. t.p.+Preface+tipped in errata slip+100; small fairly early ownership stamp top verso fr.endpaper, main problems are tanning to inner sides of endpapers (outer sides and pastedowns being brown), t.p. and final leaf of text with spots intermittently elsewhere, plus light ma…rginal pencil lining intermittently throughout with a 3 line bottom marginal note, incipient gutter opening between pp.96/7. Brown gilt-lettered cloth covers would be very good but for a 2.5 cm. cloth tear to front joint, being otherwise clean and almost unworn. Presence of errata slip possibly a point in its favour.

Add to basketALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1958). 1958 1st edition. 8vo (142 x 220mm). Pp142,ads. B/w photographs, illustrations. Dark green cloth. Cloth faded, some use but good-plus. Lacks dust-wrapper. This is the standard practical work on fishing for Scottish loch trout. Alt…hough Oatts gives his address as Cuil Lodge, Kilmelfort, Argyl, the book does not contain information about specific, named places. Oatts is taking his experience of many small lochs and lochans and their associated small streams, and systematising what he has learned so that the reader can apply it to any number of similar situations. There are numerous sketch maps of lochs, complete with depths, locations of reefs, inflows and outflows, and so on. The details of each map are strongly suggestive of real locations, but none of these lochs are named, and his descriptions in the text are presented as typical of lochs "nearly everywhere". Chapters include: The loch trout; The weather; Tackle; Dry fly and wet; Blow line and greased line; Spinning and trolling; Shore fishing; Boat fishing; More about loch trout; Preservation and predators; Relatives. Dapping also gets an enthusiastic mention. An appendix lists recommended loch trout flies, not including their tying patterns. .
