"Since I am familiar with the design of service stations, as well as other buildings, I felt that this knowledge might be used in the preparation of a publication illustrating a series of "practical conversions" to other uses. I do not presume to be an authority on this subject; however, there is no question in my mind that, unless conversions to other uses are economical and practical, they serve nor purpose." (Author). At the time of publications it was estimated that approximately 50,000 service stations will be abandoned or sold. Kerth believes that remodeling, respectively converting these buildings can be done at about half the cost of a new structure. He compiled a list of 97 different business uses and services for abandoned stations and provides detailed architectural plans, drawings and diagrams for the conversion of 47 of them to an amusement center, animal hospital, beauty salon, day care center, law offices, men's clothing store, post office, restaurant, shoe store, tunnel car wash among others. Plans and drawings are painstakingly labeled with a more or less brief descriptive text highlighting project specific challenges and their architectural solutions.
