Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos, Art, Maps (illustrator). 1st. Samuel Marsden is most remembered in NZ as the clergyman who held the first church service in the country on Christmas Day 1814. This objective biography of the missionary covers the reasons why he was, and continues to be, a controversial figure. He was sent to the convict settlement in NSW, Australia, in 1794, to be assistant chaplain. He was to become influential in the affairs of both Australia and NZ, but made enemies in the process. As a magistrate presiding over convict trials in Australia his sentences were described as being "cruel"and his regard for the Aboriginal people and their treatment was has been viewed critically , yet he largely won the respect and regard of the Maori race, Contrasts such as these, as well as Marsden's own ambiguities, made compiling an impartial biography of Marsden a taxing task for any biographer, However, Professor Yarwood's study of Marsden succeeded in doing this, more than any previous work on the missionary and today itremains among the most respected. This an ex-library copy, first edition of 1977, 341 pages including appendix, abbreviations, notes, bibliography and index, 27 b/w illustrations including portraits, four maps. Red hard covers with gilt spine titles VG, upper/lower edges reinforced with matching red tapes, light wear at spine extremities, faint librarystamp, card pocket, crossed barcode and dealer label on FFEP, light stamp top corner half title, small stamp with library codes title page verso, small library stamp top corner contents page and few successive pages, thereafter occasionally through text block, which otherwise is VG+. Plain DJ with portrait to front is plastic protected with crossed bar code lower front, two small labels at spine base, jacket lightly taped to both pastedowns.
