The author drew on a variety of sources, including notarial records, account books, and baptism, marriage, and death records. The research significantly contributes to the existing knowledge about this period in art history, correcting previous inaccuracies and providing new insights. The book discusses the lives and works of famous painters such as Frans Hals and Jacob van Ruisdael, but also sheds light on lesser-known artists. It explores themes of artistic development, the influence of patrons, and the role of the city of Haarlem in fostering artistic innovation. By delving into the personal and professional lives of these painters, the author offers a deeper understanding of their motivations, techniques, and artistic contributions during this remarkable era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
