Un volume in-12° de (16), 319, (11) pages, Reliure de l'époque en plein veau blond, un mors fendu, coiffe supérieure restaurée. Dos à nerfs orné, pièce de titre de maroquin rouge; tranches dorées, Armes non identifiées, un peu effacées, sur les plats. Première édition en français de ce curieux ouvrage écrit en latin en 1700 par Jacques Boileau, le frère de Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux. Jacques Boileau s'appuie sur les passages de la Bible et l'histoire de l'Église pour prouver le non fondé de la flagellation volontaire, considérée comme un moyen de mortifier la chair. Il s'insurge en particulier contre la « flagellation d'en bas » (sur les reins et fesses) qui « excite les mouvements impudiques à cause de la proximité des parties génitales (.) et excite au plaisir brutal de la chair » L'ouvrage condamné par la Sorbonne, donna lieu à une querelle littéraire à laquelle se mêlèrent Du Cerceau, J,-B, Thiers et Boileau-Despréaux.
