1 lettre autographe signée 1 In-4 8 août 1778 bord droit légèrement froissé C'est en 1778, que l'école fondée par l'abbé de l'Epée dont le but est d' « apprendre [aux sourds et muets] à penser avec ordre, et à combiner leurs idées » est reconnue par le roi Louis XVI. La notoriété de sa méthode dépasse les frontières du royaume e…t on vient de toute l'Europe pour être formé par l'abbé de l'Epée. Cette lettre adressée à "monseigneur", en août 1778, s'inscrit dans ce contexte. "Il a plu à Monsieur le Garde des Sceaux de me communiquer les intentions favorables du Gouvernement pour les sourds et muets et particulièrement les dispositions de Votre Grandeur pour cette portion de l'humanité. J'ose donc vous supplier, Monseigneur, de vouloir bien m'indiquer un jour, auquel vous auriez la bonté de m'aider de vos lumières sur un projet qu'on me demande à cet égard [.]". Le destinataire a annoté la lettre de notes en réponse d'une écriture difficile à déchiffrer. Philanthrope, précurseur de l'enseignement dispensé aux sourds, fondateur de ce qui est aujourd'hui l'Institut national des jeunes sourds de Paris.
