Palmer's now-legendary paranormal-reporting non-fiction enterprise, which began with, in its first issue, Kenneth Arnold's cover account of flying crescents which "skipped like saucers across a pond", an event which, for whatever reason, kicked off the modern era of UFO events. After that, Fate introduced countless events which remain, to this day, fodder for paranormal documentaries and investigation. This Fall 1948 issue - the third issue ever - bears one of the handful of truly iconic Fate covers, that being "The Red River Witch" (see scan). 12mo, illustrated staple-bound wraps, 128 pp. A Near Fine copy - and this one is as near fine as near fine gets, with just touch micro-edgewear and an almost indiscernible degree of color fade as you look toward the spine. See scans. Standard toning to the interior newsprint-grade pages, but these are supple, clean and and unchipped. Highest Grade, particularly for a periodical which often shows substantial wear from use. This issue features articles on the memorable Red River Witch, Charles Fort, a Kenneth Arnold reprise on phantom lights in Nevada, The Valley of Never-Come-Back, America's White Sunworshippers (A Thor Heyerdahl piece), The Flying Jigsaw Puzzle, America's Most Famous Ghost Story, The Temple Girls of India, The Black Art, Two Girls, One Body, The Devil, ESP events and of course much, much else, including the standard Departments, always engrossing in themselves. Original manuscript by the well-known Liverpudlian socialist Leonard Abbott, a follower of William Morris; published in pamphlet form in the prestigious ĞInternational Socialist Reviewğ in July 1901 (pp. 14-20), it was met with public outcry and caused a scandal, as illustrated by Rose L. Martin in her detailed account of the circumstances in which the wedding came about in ĞFabian Freeway. High Road to Socialism in the U.S.A. 1884-1966ğ. At the turn of the 19th century, an event shook American society like a powerful earthquake. In the aftermath of the scandalous event, outburst of rage and indignation stirred the country, especially in the most conservative and traditionalist circles. The clergyman, educator, author, and Social Gospel advocate George D. Herron, a married father-of-four, left his lawfully wedded wife Mary out of love for another woman, Carrie A. Rand. The following unconventional union between Herron and Rand took place on May 25, 1901, in a New York apartment under the appellation of socialist wedding. Carrie Rand was the daughter of a lumber baron and banker and Caroline Rand, who donated profusely to Socialists and those who believed in their cause, whose inheritance would later fund and found the Rand School of Social Science in 1906. George D. Herron (1862-1925) was at one time a Christian Socialist minister, a founder of the Rand School of Social Science, a member of the Socialist Party, and the author of books and pamphlets on social and religious issues. Pastor William Franklin Lemmons greatly disapproved of the wedding, as he later wrote in his book ĞThe Evils of Socialismğ. The binder Helen "Nellie" Gowen Haskell Noyes (1864-1940) was an esteemed American binder, whose lifelong work earned her the Guild of Bookworkers ĞLifetime Achievement Awardğ in 1937. A manuscript book, bound by a great American woman binder, which deals with socialism, universal social and civil rights, as well as the feminist cause. This book symbolises the American fight against the establishment, traditional social and legal norms, and the rule of capitalism. It was the wedding gift that the inner circle of socialist, progressive and anarchist friends ("comrades") of George D. Herron and Carrie Rand Herron crafted on the occasion of their scandalous so-called "socialist wedding," which had to set the standard for the bright future of international socialism that they hoped was nigh. The couple fled the US and took refuge in Italy after their performance of a socialist wedding provoked a storm of criticism and violent personal attacks directed at them.

Great condition some again but no flaws really except the bottom staple has gone through the cover. This is FATE Magazine, Volume 1, Number 3 (Fall 1948). The magazine was launched in 1948 by Raymond A. Palmer and Curtis Fuller, focusing on true stories of the strange, unusual, and unknown. This particular issue sold for 25˘ at the time. No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Very uncommon publication from 1968 which contains a bounty of American trademarked logos from the heyday of the post-war graphic design and advertising boon. In Black cardboard slipcase foil-stamped in white, with a 56 page booklet, 16 sheets that fold out to 4 panels, and 45 single panel sheets. An amazing document in a visually compelling format. This copy generally very nice, with some heavier wear to the slipcase, but the inner contents are in excellent, superb, crisp condition, appears scarcely looked through at all. The case itself, thought still intact, is a bit wobbly, and is missing about 1" of one of the sides, and what remains on both sides is slightly curled and peeled up form the joining cardboard underneath, leaving it a bit precarious as is (could likely be fixed up easily with PVA glue and happy to do that for anyone interested). Some further fraying at the sides and some light rubbing to covers besdes. As mentioned, all interior contents are nearly as new, remarkably so given the age. Booklet has some minor toning around edges of the back cover, and one or two of the sheets has the slightest bit of corner wear, but generally superb. The Publishers slipcase is split along the lower front edge and worn along each edge, with tape repair to case bottom and bumps to corners. Nearly fine contents in a fair to good example of the Publishers slipcase. Rare. Black slipcase contains 16 [8.5" x 8.5"] 4-panel sheets, 25 [8.5" x 8.5"] loose sheets and a 56-page [8.5" x 8.5"] perfect-bound booklet. From the introduction: "193 American trademarks, symbols and logotypes were chosen by a jury of leaders in the field of design to be represented in Trademarks/USA, the first national retrospective exhibition of its kind, which opened April 22, 1964 at the National Design Center in Marina City, Chicago, under the auspices of the Society of Typographic Arts." An amazing document that chronicles the rise of the American trademark after World War II, and by extension the graphic design profession as well. Essays include the introduction for "Trademarks/USA" including the President's Message and 5 b/w photos of jury members, an essay called The Trademark: A Graphic Summation of Individuality by Lester Beall including 5 b/w photos of the exhibition.
