'Abdias (Obadiah) of Babylon is said to have flourished about the year 59, and to have been one of the seventy disciples; but his very existence is somewhat doubtful. The work attributed to him viz. Historia Certaminis Apostolici, in ten books, was written in the 8th or 9th century.' [McClintock & Strong]. An apocryphal work telling the apostolic history along with lives of Matthew and Peter. By legend, Abdias was first Bishop of Babylon, so consecrated by saints Jude and Simon. He is revered as the First Patriarch of the Eastern Church by the Syrian Orthodox Church.
