Condition: very good. British Music composer and patron of the arts; who later, as a political writer, rigorously defended the liberties of the American Colonies, in contrast to his close friend Earl of Suffolk. His brother-in-law introduced him to Johann Christian Bach and Carl Friedrich Abel and he was subsequently very involved in their careers. From 1791-1795 he became a patron of Franz Joseph Haydn and is often acknowledged as having contributed greatly to the composers success. In the political arena Abingdon was an outspoken critic of Lord North and his Administration yet denounced the French Revolution as "A threat to World Peace"; and argued that the abolition of the Slave Trade was the result of a "New Philosophy" inspired by the new French Republic. Toward the end of his life he became entangled with severe financial problems and subsequently died in poverty at age 59. Outstanding and historically important Document, a 1763 elephant-folio Deed, executed on vellum, 2 pages, whereby Abingdon and two of his close Political Allies, transfer the "Right-Title and Interest" in a considerable estate to The Duke of Marlborough, boldly signed: "Abingdon" Plus: British politician Henry Howard (1739-1779), better known for his role as the Earl of Suffolk, Secretary of State under Lord North, who secured Hessian and Hanoverian Mercenaries to help suppress the American Revolution, he signs this Document "Suffolk and Berkshire", and: Sir James Dashwood (1715-1779), who, in British National Politics supported staunch Anti-Catholic policies and, as a Tory member of Parliament moved swiftly to call for the Repeal of the Jewish Naturalization Act. He later called for the Repeal of the Plantation Act, which allowed for Foreign-born Protestants residing in any of the American Colonies, for a period of seven years, to be deemed to be one of his Majesty%u2019s %u201CNatural-Born Subjects%u201D, he signs this Document "Dashwood". All three would play a major role in influencing political and military policy during the American Revolution. Some frays with a minor separation at the folds. The signatures are boldly signed and in excellent condition.

First Edition
4to, pp. [iv], vii, [i], 24; names completed in ink on title page; a very good copy, disbound. First edition, of three, all published the same year. The Earl of Abingdon was a somewhat eccentric supporter of the Tories in the Lords, opposed to the North government. He had been a pupil of William Markham when he was headmaster of Westminster School; and Markham had since risen to become first Dean of Christ Church, then Bishop of Chester and finally Archbishop of York in 1776. This satirical poem pictures Abingdon as remembering his schooldays, when he neglected his books for women, cricket and dice: Scarce fourteen years had pass'd away When first I thought of am'rous play, Of Women not afraid: For them I left more childish Cricket; I only strove to hit their Wicket, And put-out every Maid. (p. 3) He also recalls his early adulthood, touring the continent where, in fact, he visited Voltaire at Ferney in company with John Wilkes finally coming back to England where he took great pleasure in horseracing. He now promises to forgo the turf and concentrate on politics, tutored once more by his old schoolmaster: Under your Sword Ecclesiastic, I'll shew America a vast trick, And turn on Her the joke; I'll cut Prince Washington in two, Give Silas Deane, and Franklin too, A new Electric stroke. (p. 21) Jackson, Annals, p. 60. Five copies only of this first edition in ESTC, at the Bodleian, Cornell, Huntington, Berkeley and University of Sydney. The second edition is even rarer (BL and Durham Cathedral only) but the third is somewhat commoner.

First Edition
First edition, with two further editions following in the same year. Rare: ESTC listing copies at Bodley, Cornell, Huntington, and Fisher Library, Sydney only.A verse satire on the eccentric Earl of Abingdon's former attachment to sporting pleasures (racing, cricket and cards) and his apparent new-found interest in politics, which he expressed in his inflammatory pamphlet of 1777: Thoughts on the letter of Edmund Burke, esq. to the sheriffs of Bristol on the affairs of America. Of An Adieu to the Turf the Monthly Review noted: 'Some court wit, a knowing one too, has given, in arch numbers, the last words and dying speech of a Newmarket peer. -Very severe on the Earl of Abingdon,- for turning Patriot.' Abingdon's colourful youth is the butt of a stream of jokes: from his preference for Hoyle over Horace, to his attempts to apply the rules of cricket to courtship. 'Scarce fourteen years has pass'd away / When first I thought of am'rous play, / Of Women not afraid: / For them I left more childish Cricket; / I only strove to hit their Wicket, / And put-out every Maid' (p. 3). 4to (256 × 206 mm) in half-sheets, pp. [4], vii, [1], 24, with half-title; typographical ornaments; minor marginal browning, a light waterstain affecting upper and lower margins from p. 13, small paper repair/reinforcement to gutter of pp. 6 & 7; preserved in modern quarter morocco, spine lettered in gilt. [Jackson, p. 60.].
