Auf seiner Reise ins Ungewisse erlebt er aufregende, skurrile und amüsante Dinge. Alhaji Abubakar Imam schrieb die Abenteuergeschichte Ruwan Bagaja (Das Heilwasser) 1933 im Alter von 22 Jahren im Rahmen eines Schreibwettbewerbs des Translation Bureau in Zaria, Nigeria. Der Wettbewerb war Teil einer bedeutsamen Veränderung in der Hausa-Literatur, die bis dahin entweder mündlich überliefert oder in arabischer Schrift verfasst wurde. Hierfür sollten Werke auf Hausa in lateinischer Schrift eingereicht werden. Bald wurde Erzählliteratur auf Hausa zu einer anerkannten Kunstform. Das Heilwasser gilt heute als ein Klassiker der Hausa-Literatur, wurde in mehrere Sprachen übersetzt (u.a. Englisch, Arabisch, Französisch und Chinesisch) und inspirierte Bühnenstücke und Filmadaptionen.
