      Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First edition. Vol. 1- 404 + 4 pages. Vol. 2- 372 + 3 pages. Vol. 3- 364 + 4 pages. Vol. 4- 342 + 3 pages. Includes all 22 Rowlandson Syntax prints. each volume 5 1/2 x 8 3/4 in. Tan calf binding, 5 raised bands, gilt lettering on spine, marbled papers, edges of text block gilt. Condition of each volume is FAIR: heavy overall wear to covers and spines, some covers detached or almost detached, spines dry and flaking- some leather labels missing, some pieces of spines missing, light spotty soiling to covers, spines darkened, pages clean- illustrations bright and clean, bindings sound, large bookplate of Thomas J. Barratt on inside of each front cover. NOTE: this is the first appearance of Combe's Tour of Dr. Syntax and the Rowlandson illustrations. Some of the Rowlandson illustrations appear only in this state in these volumes, in addition there are 20 other hand colored illustrations, not related to Syntax, mainly travel scenes: lakes, castles etc. Poetry, RGR.
