Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the history and cultural significance of the Collegiate Church of St. Peter, Westminster. Considered one of the most iconic structures in Britain, Westminster Abbey holds a prominent place in the nation's history, serving as the coronation church for English and British monarchs since 1066. Its iconic Gothic architecture, stunning stained glass, and royal tombs have made it a beloved landmark and a symbol of national pride. The author traces the abbey's origins to the 11th century, delving into the stories of its medieval abbots, royal patrons, and the countless individuals who have shaped its legacy. Through meticulous research and engaging prose, the book sheds light on the abbey's role in shaping English history, its impact on religious thought, and its enduring status as a symbol of faith, power, and artistic achievement. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Edition : FIRST EDITION , Half crushed crimson levant morocco, gilt tooled, gilt decorated and titled spine, a.e.g. by L. Broca. , Originally issued in parts, as with most sets, this copy has mixed states of the plates but most are in the first state. One of the most famous colour plate books showing the scenes of London from the early 19th century. Tooley considers this ?one of the great colour plate books? and that it ?should form the corner stone of any collection of books on the subject,? arguing that the plates ?present an unrivaled picture of London in early 19th century, of historic value, as many of the buildings no longer exist.? The architecture of each plate was drawn by Rowlandson ? the finest English architecture painter of the time ? and the people and still life added in by Augustus Pugin. The first two volumes were written by William Henry Pyne, who handed it over to William Combe for the third volume ? all of which focused primarily on the history of the city rather than its aesthetics (Adams)., Size : Quarto (338 x 272 mm). , Illustrated with wood-engraved titles within architectural background, engraved dedication leaves, and 104 hand-colored aquatint plates by Bluck, Stadler, Hill and Sutherland after Rowlandson and Pugin. , Volume : three volumes, References : Abbey Scenery 212; Tooley 7; Adams 99; Martin Hardie, pp. 100-103; Prideaux, pp. 121-124 and 348., [4], iv, 231; [2], vi, [2], 239; [2], iv, [2], 280, 6 pp, Some offsetting from plates to text, infrequent light spotting, a couple plates with tiny nicks to margins, joints rubbed, a lovely set.

First Edition. London: R. Ackermann, 1812. 2 vols, large 4to, [i-xx], [1]-330 including appendix, [6, index]; [i-iv], [1]-275, [1, blank],[4, index]pp. 83 plates in all, viz: 1 plan and 1 portrait both uncolored, 1 colored line engraving and 80 full-page aquatints. Old half red morocco, rebacked preserving original gilt-pannelled backstrip, marbled sides and endpapers, top edges gilt, bookplates. Binding worn at extremities with small losses to marbled paper, internally very good with portrait offset onto title page, some browning and scattered foxing but with plates and margins generally clean. ? First edition, large-paper copy with the portrait of William Vincent on India paper. A respectable copy of this important color plate book. The first plate in the second volume "Aymer de Valance" is in the first state (signed "Mackenzie"), which suggests a first issue copy (see Abbey). Altogether there are 83 plates by 16 different artists including Mackenzie, Pugin, Villiers, Bluck and others. The depiction of light through the stained glass windows and slanted across the cathedral's monuments is particularly lovely. "There is no doubt that Ackermann considered Westminster Abbey the supreme example of his taste and achievement" (Ford, Ackermann 1783-1983, p.41). Abbey, Scenery, 213. Tooley's English Books with Colored Plates, 2.

Handsomely bound by Bayntun of Bath ca. 1920. Three-quarter red straight-grain morocco over marbled boards, double-ruled in gilt, spine with five raised bands, elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt in compartments, matching marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Fine. "The book was issued in twenty-six monthly parts, each part containing four plates, and at 7s. a part, a price that was advanced early on to 10. 6d. for non-subscribers. A thousand sets are said to have been issued, a statement that may be correct for the original part publication, but must be considerably short of the final number, when bound sets distributed later are taken into account" "At the end of the third volume, a list of thirteen errata for the three volumes is given. If these have been corrected then the set will be found to be a late issue: if all the errata are uncorrected (this is rare), then the book has been bound from parts; the same claim of part binding can be made for sets that have errata uncorrected except for that reading 'coustom' for 'custom' on page 218 of volume 1. This is the case with the present copy -- all errata uncorrected except one." (Abbey). "The [book's] striking feature is not so much the text (though the third volume is notable as the work of W. Combe) but the coloured illustrations, in this case the combined work of Pugin and Rowlandson. The pictures in this book cover all the well-known public buildings of London-churches, banks, prisons, theatres, etc.,-capitally portrayed by Pugin. The great metropolis, with its high life and low, its light and its shade, could have had no one better fitted [than Rowlandson] to portray its inmates. The spirited figures that he adds to Pugin's backgrounds show that his talents were not limited to the ludicrous and grotesque. With the happiest faculty for expressing character, he is equally at home amid a serious discussion of naval policy at the Admiralty Board-Room, or among the excited, gambling crowd of the Royal Cockpit. At Westminster Abbey or Bridewell, the College of Physicians or Billingsgate, everywhere he has seized on the essential features and the typical frequenters of the place. The book is a living and delightful record of the old metropolis of [two] hundred years ago, the London of Lamb, Jane Austen, Dickens, and Thackeray, of places and incidents that are now mere memories" (Martin Hardie, pp. 101-102). "The 'Microcosm of London' is one of the great colour-plate books, and a carefully selected copy should form the corner stone of any collection of books on this subject. The plates by Rowlandson and Pugin present an unrivaled picture of London in early 19th century, of historic value, as many of the buildings no longer exist" (Tooley). Early impressions are particularly prized: "original impressions of these splendid plates have a luminous quality entirely absent from later printings" (Abbey). Abbey, Scenery, 212. Adams, London Illustrated, 99. Martin Hardie, pp. 100-103. Prideaux, pp. 121-124 and 348. Tooley 7.

Abbey's second state of Plate 6 ("Winchester College, from the Meadow"), dated "Jany. 1, 1816"; Abbey's second state of Plate 23 ("Westminster School Room"), with hats added to the masters; Abbey's second state of Plate 26 ("Charter House, from the Play Ground"), depicting thirteen boys and masters playing cricket (instead of washerwomen). Handsomely bound ca. 1940 by Birdsall of Northampton & London (stamp-signed in gilt on lower front turn-in). Full red morocco, covers decoratively paneled and tooled in gilt. Spine with five raised bands decoratively ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, decorative gilt board edges and turn-ins, cockerel endpapers, top edge gilt. Housed in a later leather-edged slipcase. A wonderful example - the plates with early watermarks, all clean and fresh with superb hand coloring. With the pencil marks of the late, great bookseller Charles W. Traylen of Guildford on the verso of the front free endpaper date "30. 11. 63" "[Ackermann's History of the University of Oxford (1813) and History of the University of Cambridge (1814)] were fittingly followed by a History of the Colleges.Of this also a thousand copies were issued in monthly parts, the first appearing on January 1, 1816.The text, with the exception of the parts dealing with Winchester, Eton, and Harrow (the work of W.H. Pyne), were entirely written by Combe, and the same artists were employed in its decoration, the highest praise for which is that it equals, if not surpasses, that of Oxford and Cambridge. The original drawings for the forty-eight coloured plates were distributed among Westall, who executed fifteen, and Pugin and Mackenzie, who did fourteen each, while one is by J. Gendall, who besides illustrating Ackermann's publications was employed for some years in managing his business, particularly in developing the new art of lithography. The actual engraving was done by Havell and Stadler, with a few plates by Bluck and Bennett, and four line engravings of costume by Agar after Uwins. Here again it may be noticed that many of the aquatints are printed in two colours before being finished by hand" (Martin Hardie). The roots of Birdsall of Northampton "stretch back to the early eighteenth century but it was in 1792 that John Lacy's Northampton bindery was acquired by William Birdsall, continuing in his family until 1961.In Birdsall's heyday, Gerring (Notes on Bookbinding, 1899) reported a staff of 250 engaged in making ladies handbags, fancy boxes, and stationary; as well as all types of bookbinding. The firm seemed always ready to experiment and careful records and samples were kept by Richard Birdsall, great-great-nephew of the founder, until he died in 1909.The firm's collection of over 3,000 finishing tools passed to the University of Toronto" (Maggs, Bookbinding in the British Isles II, #262, and #321). "Birdsall's is notable for the high quality of their leathers and finishings, as well as for the inventive style of their 'inlaid pictorial bindings'" (Chevalier Collection, Christie's November 9, 1990). Abbey, Scenery, 440; Adams, London Illustrated, 116; Martin Hardie, pp. 106-107; Prideaux, pp. 126 and 332; Tooley 3.

[Abbey Scenery 213; Tooley 2; Prideaux p. 124-125; Lowndes vol. 7, p. 2889; Bobins 608]. A very handsome set with many brightly-colored aquatints. In the introduction of the book the author writes: "The Collegiate Church of Westminster may, without fear of contradiction, be considered as one of the most interesting edifices in the British Empire." After the success of The Microcosm of London (1808-1810) Ackerman took on the project of a two-volume work on Westminster, which was first published in sixteen monthly numbers and issued in 2 volumes in 1812. ?? Ackermann had issued his History of Westminster Abbey (1812), and when complete, he had all the original drawings for the seventy plates which had been made by Aug. Pugin, Fred Mackenzie, H. Villiers, G. Shepherd, Thompson, T. Unwin, and W. J. White, bound up with the letterpress printed on vellum, making a unique copy. Mr Papworth prepared a special design, with Gothic details, for the brass mountings and clasps for the two volumes, which cost £120. This copy Ackermann valued so highly that he used to provide a pair of white kid gloves for the use of the person to whom was granted the favour of inspecting it. He sent a copy of the book to Mr Papworth inscribed with his sincere regards and a draft for £50." [Prideaux, S. T. Aquatint Engraving; A Chapter in the History of Book Illustration. London, Duckworth & Co., 1909. p.123. According to Tooley this vellum copy with its original drawings may be see in a glass case at Westminster Abbey. [English Books with Coloured Plates; London: Bratsford, 1954; p. 7] RUDOLPH ACKERMANN (1764 ? 1834) was an German-born bookseller, inventor, lithographer, publisher and businessman. He moved to Paris at a young age and settled in London at 23. In 1795 he established a print-shop and drawing-school on the Strand, very close to the Royal Academy of Arts and his business quickly expanded and flourished. As a publisher Ackermann was both creative and efficient, bringing to the commercial production of color plate books innovative techniques and an uncompromising attention to detail which ensured uniform high quality (ODNB). He was also an innovator in carriage design and was an early adopter and promoter of gas lighting. WILLIAM COMBE (1742 ? 1823) was a British writer best known as the author of The Three Tours of Doctor Syntax, a comic poem, illustrated by artist Thomas Rowlandson's color plates. He also wrote the texts for various illustrated books, including Oxford, Cambridge and Westminster published by Ackermann.

First Edition, First Issue (paper watermarked 1816). Illustrated with two hand-colored aquatint engravings: by Stadler after Pugin, and Havell after McKenzie. 1 vols. Folio. This folio forms part of one of Ackermann's larger, though not so successful projects, his History of the Colleges. Ford in his book on Ackermann notes that William Combe wrote the text for this, as well as five other schools, in 1811, though the book itself did not appear until 1816, with plates. Ackermann believed that "Old Boys" would buy up the volumes with great sentimental gusto; the fact is, the initial subscription was less than 400. He then bound up the remaining sheets separately and sold them as individual folios, this being on of them. Tooley notes that most of these have later issue plates. Abbey Scenery 438; Tooley 3 Original drab brown wrappers, uncut, printed label on upper cover, spine perished, some chips to fore-edge, else a very good, tall copy in its original state Illustrated with two hand-colored aquatint engravings: by Stadler after Pugin, and Havell after McKenzie. 1 vols.
