According to Sabin, the earliest edition is dated 1858 and the work was reprinted in 1859 (see Sabin 52322). It had a color frontispiece (according to some authorities), ten color plates (one folded) and a map. According to the publisher's note (page ii): "The Steel Engravings with which this Work is embellished were executed from Photographs taken expressly for it by Mr. Holmes, of Broadway, New York, who was commissioned by the Publishers to visit the scenes represented." Agriculture, horticulture and technology are the main topics. Includes "Geological Tour in the State of New York" by E. Meriam, pp. 156-164, which includes a page and a half description of the Whiteface region of the Adirondacks in autumn 1848, focusing on the 1844 fire on Whiteface and its affect on the vegetation. "The institute was founded on February 18, 1828, and its fairs attracted wide attention from investors and capitalists. Among the inventions which received early recognition from the institute were the McCormick reaper, the sewing machine, Colt's firearms, the type revolving and double power printing press machines, the first anthracite coal burning stove, the Morse telegraph, the Beach Pneumatic Transit, the stocking loom, the telephone, and the Francis metallic lifeboat and lifesaving appliances." - New International Encyclopedia (1905). Munro and 1913 by Street & Smith. The 1913 edition was Street & Smith's number 719 of their "New Medal Library" series. This dime novel has been attributed to William George "Gilbert" Patten (1866-1945), a very prolific American author best known for the Frank Merriwell series written under his pen name Burt L. Standish. His earliest novels were published by Beadle and later, Norman L. Munro, but most of his career was spent doing hack work for Street & Smith. "Apart from the Merriwell stories, Patten wrote 75 complete novels and an unknown number of stories. He estimated that he had written 40 million words as an author. In total, some 500 million of his books were in print, making him one of the best-selling fiction authors of all time." - Wikipedia. Not in Plum, or supplements. Detailed estimate of the costs of construction and operation and prospects and potential revenue for a railroad from Boston, Massachusetts, to Ogdensbugh, New York. The projected route was from Boston to Burlington, Vermont, and from Port Kent or Plattsburgh, New York, to Ogdensburgh through the northern Adirondacks. There is no mention of ferrying freight and passengers across Lake Champlain. The two possible routes through the Adirondacks are described in detail and the region's natural resources -- iron and timber -- are discussed. Cole (1976) 1925. Plum 4472. Sabin 31064. Elaborate promotional brochure with schedules and timetables on one side, and a large color pictorial birdseye view/map on the other, along with illustrations and descriptions of tourist destinations and additional timetables. The spectacular color view, "Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg Railroad and Connecting Lines . Bird's-Eye View of the Tourists' Ideal Route from Niagara to the Sea," measures 19x56.5 cm (7 1/2 x 22 1/4 inches). It shows the coast northeast from Boston to Mount Desert Island, north to the St. Lawrence River, and west to Niagara Falls. In New York State, a significant portion of the trackage north of the New York Central main line was once part of the Rome Watertown & Ogdensburg Railroad. At one point the RW&O, chartered in 1832 to connect northern New York with the Erie Canal, had 643 route miles. In 1891 the RW&O was leased to the New York Central railroad. The division headquarters was established in Watertown and the RW&O name was incorporated in timetables. New York Central advertising and high quality service, including sleeping cars, established the Thousand Islands region as a premier tourist destination.
