Less widely understood, but just as significant were the naval battles of the war. These battles mark the advent of mode (illustrator). Very, Very Large Book. The war between the North and the South conjures up thoughts of Gettysburg, Shiloh, Chickamauga, Manassas, Fredericksburg and others. Less widely understood, but just as significant were the naval battles of the war. These battles mark the advent of modern naval warfare. Ironclads met in battle for the first time. This book covers the full scope of naval activities in the war- blockades and blockade runners, battles on inland waterways, battles on the high seas, and the strategies of both the North and the South. The heyday of the wooden tall ships gave way to the ferocious iron seagoing weapons of the 1860's. Written by a man with first hand knowledge of many of these battles, the reader (for the first time in almost a century) can once again relive these famous encounters in a way that no modern book can retell.
