Octavo, gray leatherette & boards (hardcover), gilt letters, 833 pp. Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: The Civil War marks the development of modern naval warfare. Ironclad ships, steam power, maneuverable gunnery, together helped make battles at sea more deadly and more decisive. Raphael Semmes was one of the pioneers. A distinguished naval officer in the United States Navy prior to the War Between the states, as a Southerner, he stood firm with the South. First as Commander of the Sumter, the first Confederate ship of war, then as Captain of the CSS Alabama -- that most notorious and successful of Southern warships -- Semmes could well be considered the father of the Confederate Navy. Memoirs of Service Afloat is not only the story of Admiral Semmes adventures, cruises and battles, it is the history of the development of the Confederate navy. Written very much from the point-of-view of a Southern officer and gentleman, Memoirs of Service Afloat is a book that retains its value to any student of the civil War. It is a document of historical import and human courage and valor. Civil War, War between the States, American History, United States History, U. S. History, Confederate States of America, Confederacy, Americana, U.S.-iana, Military History, Military Strategy. bslic.

Until then, he had been a serving officer in the US Navy from 1826 to 1860. Late in the war, he was promoted to rear admiral and also acted briefly as a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army. His appointment or arrangement to act as a temporary brigadier general from April 5 to April 26, 1865, was never submitted to or officially confirmed by the Confederate Senate.(Wiki).

Leather is scuffed at hinges, spine and at bumped corners. Four-inch strips of paper have been added to the front and rear inner hinges (gutters) for reinforcement. Pages have barely detectable sunning with occasional small spots. Twelve pages have faint patterned stains. (I have tried to provide a complete and accurate description of the book's condition. The seller's photos should provide assurance that this is quite an attractive book). Illustrations include a portrait of Admiral Semmes, two full-page portraits of Confederate Navy personnel, and 5 full-page beautifully colored chromo-tints featuring ships in action. 833 pages. Admiral Semmes, as an admiral in the Confederate Navy was considered the most successful commerce raider in maritime history. His book, written and published just four years after the close of the Civil War, provides a lengthy and vivid account of naval action throughout the conflict. This primary source volume should be of special interest to academics and Civil War buffs as an example of post-war efforts by Confederate veterans to justify their actions. Semmes is credited with popularizing the phrase "War Between the States". Semmes was charged with treason in 1865, but the charges were subsequently dropped.
