OZANNE, Nicolas-Marie (1728 -1811), after WEBBER, John (1750?-1793). "View of Karakakooa Bay in Owhyhee, where Captn. Cook was Killed". ca 1785. Single sheet, tipped-in to modern mount (6 x 10 6/8 inches). EXCEPTIONALLY FINE WATERCOLOUR DRAWING, after the "View of Karakakooa Bay in Owhyhee, where Captn. Cook was Killed" by John Webber, published in 1784 to accompany the official account of Cook's third voyage, showing HMS Resolution and Discovery in the background and boats and canoes of the Hawaiians busy in the bay, all against the backdrop of a towering forest covered cliff. Provenance: with 19th-century pencilled inscription on the verso: "P Ozanne Ohaite" and "6F"; with Christie's Paris, 1st April 2016, lot 62, attributed to Pierre Ozanne One of a series of fine watercolour drawings painted in reduced format after the originals created to accompany the published accounts of Cook's voyages. Ozanne's depiction of "Resolution Bay" after William Hodges is part of the celebrated touring exhibition of the Rothschild drawings of Waddesdon Manor, see item 7 in Juliet Carey's catalogue of the exhibition "Theatres of Life.". Nicholas Ozanne was a marine artist best known for a series of views of French ports and for illustrating the works of Duhamel du Monceau. His sister, Jeanne-Françoise Ozanne (1735 - 1795), was an engraver - her works include Vues de Dieppe, de Saint- Valéry, de Livourne, des colonies françaises. His second sister, Marie-Jeanne Ozanne (1736 1786), married the engraver Le Gouaz, whilst her own works include Vue de Livourne and Temps serein, after Vernet ; the Ferme flamande and the Relais flamands, after Wouwerman. His brother, Pierre Ozanne (1737 1813) was an engraver and marine engineer, and it may be that Nicholas intended that his brother should engrave this exquisite drawing for publication, hence the inscription on the verso. The original artist of this view, John Webber, was the official artist of Cook's third voyage A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, 1784. However he did not witness the tragic scene of Cook's death himself, and therefore did not include a depiction of it in the official account. Instead this image of Karakakooa Bay was included, and "The Death of Captain Cook" privately and separately published by Webber in 1782. It took eleven months for the news of Cook's death on the 14th February 1779 in Hawaii to reach the British Admiralty in London. Cook's third and tragic last voyage had attempted to locate the much sought-after North-West Passage, a longed-for ice-free sea route which would link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. After a long tour of the coast of Alaska as far as the Arctic Circle, Cook decided to over-winter in Hawaii, which he had named after his patron the Earl of Sandwich. "After carrying out a running survey of the easternmost of the Hawaiian Islands, Cook anchored in Kealakekua Bay on the island of Hawaii on 17 January 1779. At first he was well received and by some accounts was considered by the Hawaiians as the embodiment of their god Lono. On 4 February 1779 Cook got under way to continue his survey of the islands but was forced to return to Kealakekua Bay for repairs after the Resolution's foremast was damaged in a violent storm. It soon became clear that his return was not welcome, and bad relations culminated in the theft of the Discovery's cutter. On the morning of 14 February Cook, with less than his usual judgment, landed with an escort of marines in an attempt to persuade the local chief to return on board where he intended to hold him as a hostage against the return of the cutter. The chief readily agreed to accompany Cook, but at the landing place they were met by a hostile crowd and in the altercation that followed Cook and four of the marines were killed" (Andrew C. F. David for DNB). The most matter-of-fact account of Cook's death is to be found in the journal of First-Lieutenant James Burney (later Read Admiral): "with Glasses we could see Capt'n. Cook r.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------- Jean-François de Galaup de La Pérouse (1741-1788) was a French navigator, circumnavigator and geographer in the Age of Enlightenment. From 1772 to 1776, La Pérouse sailed on behalf of the French governor in the Indian Ocean between the French-controlled colonies of Mauritius, Reunion, Pondicherry in southern India and Madagascar and later also to Australia. In February 1788, La Pérouse sent a message with the further planned route home: via Tonga, New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands it was to go to New Guinea. But La Pérouse did not achieve any of these goals. Both ships and crew disappeared without a trace. The ships are believed to have been hit by a tropical cyclone. Condition: Good. Engraving. Handcolored and matted. The work titled "Naufrage des deux chaloupes, au Port des Francais" was created by Nicolas Marie Ozanne and engraved by Dequevauviller, with script by L. Aubert. It is Plage 25 in the "Atlas du Voyage de la Perouse," published in 1797 by L'Imprimerie de la Republique. The engraving measures 41 cm in width and 28 cm in height. This composition is an engraved drawing depicting a dramatic maritime scene at Lituya Bay, Alaska. The setting is a tumultuous sea, where two longboats (chaloupes) are shown shipwrecked. The foreground is dominated by the chaotic struggle of sailors clinging to debris amidst towering waves. The figures are rendered with dynamic expressions and gestures, emphasizing the peril and urgency of the situation. In the middle ground, the remaining parts of the vessels are visible, and some crew members attempt to navigate the wreckage. The background features a serene landscape of rugged mountains and dense forests, offering a stark contrast to the tumultuous scene in the foreground. The sky is filled with dramatic clouds, enhancing the overall tension and atmosphere of the artwork. The engraving's style reflects the precision and attention to detail typical of late 18th-century maritime art. The lines are finely etched, capturing both the ferocity of the sea and the tranquility of the surrounding landscape. This work is historically significant as it is part of the narrative of Jean-Francois de Galaup, comte de La Perouse's voyage. La Perouse embarked on an expedition from France in 1785 to further the discoveries initiated by Captain Cook. Unfortunately, he was shipwrecked in 1788, but his documented experiences, including maps and views, were preserved and published in this atlas. The cultural context reflects the Age of Enlightenment's spirit of exploration and scientific inquiry, as European powers sought to chart unknown territories. This particular scene, set in Alaska, underscores the dangers faced by explorers during these expeditions. The engraving is part of a larger atlas, "La Perouse's Voyages," which contains 34 maps and views. This specific piece is listed under List No 3355.025 and Page No 25 in the Rumsey Collection. The work is an exceptional example of 18th-century cartographic art, issued to accompany La Perouse's global voyages, with particular emphasis on the hazards and discoveries encountered during these explorations.

Pamphlet. Condition: Very good. First edition of James Madison's Transmission of Two Letters from Gov. Harrison Of The Indiana Territory to Congress, published in 1811, after the Battle of Tippecanoe. (illustrator). First Edition. Octavo, 24pp. Disbound. Free of foxing or notable wear. Includes the scarce folding chart of troops killed and wounded at Prophet's Town on November 7th, 1811. From the private collection of Tom Charles Huston. (Howes H-247). The Battle of Tippecanoe occurred on November 7, 1811, near present-day Lafayette, Indiana, between American forces led by Governor William Henry Harrison and Native American warriors associated with Shawnee leaders Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa. The battle took place near Prophetstown, with Harrison commanding approximately 1,000 troops, including regular soldiers, militia, and volunteers, while the Native American forces numbered around 500-700 warriors from various tribes. The Native Americans launched a surprise pre-dawn attack on Harrison's encampment but were eventually repelled. The Americans suffered around 62 killed and 126 wounded, with similar or slightly higher casualties estimated for the Native Americans. The battle weakened Tecumseh's confederation and led to the burning of Prophetstown by Harrison's troops.

A pair of lithographs, coloured by hand, 'drawn by J.H. Lynch'. (Expert marginal repairs, margin of first plate with imprint shaved. Both prints re-backed). A marvellously atmospheric pair of images after paintings by the Sussex-born artist, William Shayer. The first plate ably captures slightly nervous bonhomie with which the members of the hunt greet each other. One rider blows his horn as the pack with the hunt servants make their way through a small hamlet and up the hill towards the meeting place. On the skyline of the hill on the left a further group of riders can be seen making their way towards the meeting point. The hounds in the right foreground are alert, their flags in the air and keen to go off. The second plate presents a bucolic scene: at the end of a successful day in the field, members of the hunt gather outside a local pub, the landlord serves stirrup cup whilst the riders smoke and discuss the day's sport. In the mid-ground the pack is led back to the kennels by the huntsman, followed by a couple of riders and a gentleman lucky enough to have his carriage ready to convey him homewards. Sold as a pair.
