Their stories, from ambassadresses downwards, never before told, are a feast of eccentricity, genuine hardship and genuine heroism, and make for a hilarious, compelling and fascinating book.

Bound in full vellum, raised bands on spine, leather spine label intact [with edge chips], edges sprayed in red, binding and hinges tight, illustrated throughout with head and tail pieces. Includes the portrait of Duranti which is commonly lacking, placed at the beginning of the Epistola. This copy, like that of Houghton, has engraved initials pasted over the typographic ones on pages cxx, cxxix - cxxxvii, cxli - clix (also one on clx) but not ccxvii. These covers are not bowed, as this book resides in a blue cloth covered slipcase, also in Very Good Condition ++.
