When E.W. (Jim) Swanton died in January 2000 at the age of 92, the tributes poured in from cricket lovers everywhere, among them John Major, who described him as 'one of the great cricket writers of the century'. For over seventy years, from the age of Bradman, Jim Swanton described all the great cricket occasions; his immense knowledge and sharp judgement made him a legend. This celebration of his life in cricket includes the best of his writing (including his memories of life on the Burma - Siam railway in the last war), right up to the time of his death. Here too are a selection of the many tributes paid to Swanton after his death, including Sir Tim Rice, John Woodcock, Charles Fry, Lord Runcie, Richard Hutton, Colin Cowdrey, Richie Bernard, Christopher Martin-Jenkins and Robin Mentor. David Rayvern Allen was the last person to interview Swanton, and this interview is included in full, with an introduction by John Major.

This classic history of the Cherokee Nation tells in vivid detail the tragic story of a great and beloved people both before and after it was uprooted and forced to travel that bitter road known as the 'Trail of Tears'. Marion L. Starkey relates how the Cherokees had at first lived in harmony with their white neighbors in the Southeastern United States, how they had adopted modern dress and technology and how Sequoia had developed a Cherokee alphabet. The author explains how this harmonious relationship was shattered beginning in the late 1830s, when the Federal government undertook to remove the Cherokees from their ancestral lands in Georgia and the adjoining states, and force them across the Mississippi to what would become Indian Territory and then Oklahoma. She recounts the struggles surrounding this shameful removal, masterfully describing the roles played by the U.S. government, the state of Georgia, and the Cherokee people. Victims finally of greed and cynicism, the Cherokees were herded along the 'Trail of Tears', an enforced migration which produced incredible suffering, horror, and death, and which remains one of the darkest chapters in American history. Written with great empathy and respect for a noble people. Marion Lena Starkey (1901-91), was Editor of the Saugus Herald newspaper and a teacher at the Hampton Institute and the University of Connecticut at New London, having attended the Harvard Graduate school of Education. A descendant of Mayflower passenger Peregrine White, Starkey has published extensively on the Salem Witch Trials and the history of New England. Quite a scarce book.

Here is a recovered Renaissance classic, a Catalan novel of chivalry translated into English for the first time by American poet and translator David H. Rosenthal (1945-92). Cervantes singles out 'Tirant lo Blanc' for very special praise in Don Quixote, in the scene in which the don's friends, eager to save his sanity, are making a bonfire of the romances of chivalry which have constituted his sole intellectual and spiritual nourishment, Cervantes refers to this work, putting into the mouth of a character the suggestion that the book deserves to remain in print throughout the ages. Joanot Martorell (c.1410-65), was a Valencian knight and the author of this novel, first published in Valencia in 1490. Sadly he suffered an early death due to court intrigue, leaving the novel unfinished. It was prepared for publication by his friend and colleague, Marti Joan de Galba (d. 1490).

In 'Home' Francis Pryor, author of 'The Making of the British Landscape', archaeologist and broadcaster, takes us on his lifetime's quest, to discover the origins of family life in prehistoric Britain. Francis Pryor's search for the origins of our island story has been the quest of a lifetime. In 'Home', the Time Team expert explores the first nine thousand years of life in Britain, from the retreat of the glaciers to the Romans' departure. Tracing the settlement of domestic communities, he shows how archaeology enables us to reconstruct the evolution of habits, traditions and customs. But this too is Francis Pryor's own story, of his passion for unearthing our past, from Yorkshire to the west country, Lincolnshire to Wales, digging in freezing winters, arid summers, mud and hurricanes, through frustrated journeys and euphoric discoveries. Evocative and intimate 'Home' shows how, in going about their daily existence, our prehistoric ancestors created the institution that remains at the heart of the way we live now, the family.
