Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition. Deep blue library-binding boards with gilt titles to spine. Near fine with light bowing to covers. Pages are tight, clean and intact. Oblong quarto: size is 11-1/4" by 8-3/4". 432 pages. A comprehensive genealogy of the descendants of Joseph Linenberger (born 1716). Jo…seph and his family migrated from Germany to Russia somewhere around 1768. What prompted this move was an open invitation from Russian empress Catherine II [the Great] inviting foreigners to settle the territory along the lower Volga River. What she neglected to mention was that the area was overrun with wild, uncivilized tribes like the Bashkirs, Kirghiz and Tartars. There also weren't any trees. Despite this, the Linenbergers and thousands of others settled and prospered there (104 colonies were founded along the Volga River). Joseph, a carpenter, built his own home at Marienthal. His son Hanjoerg (born 1767) was 9 years old when he was captured by a Kirghiz hoard raid - 11 years later he escaped, returned to his village, and married. His son Melchior (1800-1856) had two marriages and 9 children; descendants of 6 of these ended up in America, the remainder stayed in Russia. This book is reasonably comprehensive. It goes family by family; listing parents and children, their birth and death dates, birthplace, marriage date, religion, and occupation. There is also interspersed text containing anecdotes and other significant facts about families. Unfortunately, it doesn't have an index, so finding a particular individual is a little time-consuming - unless you know where to start looking. Despite this, the book is an excellent source of genealogical material on this family.
