Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
Other. ALS (w. 8 in. x h. 10 in.), 2 pages (one sheet folded once). On Department of Justice letterhead. Ink on laid paper. Moderate handling wear with light age toning. Accompanied by a small card (1.5 × 3 in.), signed in ink: "Edward Pierrepont / May 25, 1876." Attorney General Amos T. Akerman here appoints the prominent New York lawyer and reformer Edwards Pierrepont (18171892) as a special assistant to the U.S. District Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Pierrepont was tasked with aiding in the prosecution of Alderman James Irving, a New York City politician charged with assaulting Deputy U.S. Marshal Dowley in late 1871. The case, widely reported in the press, reflected the tense confrontation between Tammany Hall's municipal power and federal enforcement officers empowered under the postCivil War Enforcement Acts. The choice of Pierrepont (already a nationally recognized figure, and later U.S. Attorney General from 187576 and Minister to Great Britain) underscored the political sensitivity of prosecuting a sitting alderman associated with the Tammany Machine. The prosecution marked one of the early moments when the federal government, under President Grant, intervened in New York's volatile political scene during the unraveling of the Tweed Ring. The laid-in card, signed by Pierrepont in 1876 (during his tenure as Attorney General under Grant), offers an association piece linking two Attorney Generals to this tumultuous period of political reform in New York City. RW Consignment. Shelved at Rockville, Room A, General Ephemera Part 2. . Amos T. Akerman served as U.S. Attorney General from 187071, appointed by President Grant. He is best remembered for his vigorous prosecution of the Ku Klux Klan in the South, but his tenure also included high-profile interventions in New York. The Irving case arose in November 1871, just weeks after the exposure of the Tweed Ring. When Alderman James Irving assaulted a Deputy U.S. Marshal, the matter quickly escalated to the federal level. Bringing in Pierrepont signaled that the Department of Justice intended to support the enforcement of federal authority in New York City despite entrenched local political interests. This episode highlights the federal government's limited but strategic involvement in curbing Tammany excesses, not by prosecuting Tweed directly, but by acting where federal officers or elections were obstructed. The inclusion of Pierrepont's 1876 signed card neatly bookends his trajectory from special assistant in this case to head of the Department of Justice himself. . 1402569. Special Collections.
