Air Commodore Alan Christopher Deere, DSO, OBE, DFC & Bar (12 December 1917 ? 21 September 1995) was a New Zealand fighter ace with the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. He was also known for several near-death experiences over the course of the war. This led to his published autobiography being titled 'Nine Lives'. Posted to No. 54 Squadron, he flew Supermarine Spitfires during the Battle of France and became a fighter ace by the end of May 1940. For his exploits he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) the following month. He participated in the subsequent Battle of Britain, during which he shot down several more enemy aircraft, and had his Spitfire destroyed from under him more than once. His continued accomplishments earned him a bar to his DFC in September 1940. He was soon promoted to squadron leader, and commanded No. 403 Squadron RCAF for several months in 1942. He led a fighter wing from Biggin Hill for six months in 1943, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his achievements. By the end of the war, he was credited with the destruction of 22 enemy aircraft, ranking him the second-highest scoring New Zealand fighter ace. Later research has seen this total revised to 17 victories. Ref A5 4.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Spitfire Flying Legend - 60th Anniversary 1936-96 (Osprey Classic Aircraft) By John M. Dibbs, Tony Holmes, John M. Dibbs (Photographs by), Alan Deere (Foreword by) Hardback, ex library, scuffed edges, creased, dust jacket two 40mm closed tears to edges 176 pages Published by Osprey Publishing, 2012 ISBN: 1855325942 colour photographs 28.5 x 24.2 centimetres (1.27 kg) As much a national hero as Wellington, Nelson or Montgomery, the Supermarine Spitfire has become the most recognisable icon of World War 2 for several generations of Britons. From the throaty growl of its Rolls-Royce Merlin, or Griffon, to its beautifully tapered elliptical wings, the Spitfire is a true aeronautical thoroughbred. Regarded by many as the saviour of the Sceptred Isle 'in its darkest hour', the Spitfire is without a doubt the most famous combat aircraft the world has ever seen. 1996 celebrates the 60th anniversary of the fighter's first flight, and this lavishly illustrated volume serves as a tribute to the airworthy survivors of today. About the Author Tony Holmes has worked as Osprey's aerospace editor since 1989, having previously served as an author/photographer for this publishing house in Australasia. He established the critically acclaimed and hugely popular Aircraft of the Aces series in 1994.
