Dr. Paul Chevallier (1884-1960) was a pioneering hematologist in interwar France. In 1931, he founded the Societe Francaise d'Hematologie, the first learned society devoted to blood disorders. Three of the works contained herein are inscribed to him (the monographs by Du Bois and Pimpaneau, and the article by di Guglielmo). The term 'reticuloendothelial system', or RES, is a physiological categorization first put forth by Dr. Ludwig Aschoff in 1922. Today the preferred term is 'mononuclear phagocyte system,' although new discoveries and shifting terminology leave room for debate as to whether the two terms reference the same thing. Aschoff's 1925 article "Morphologie des Retikulo-Endothelialen Systems" leads off this collection. Dated works span 1926-1945. Texts in French, German, and Italian.

No Binding. Condition: Good. This collection consists of 53 albumen prints, approximately 16 x 12 cm, with slight variations in size. Some photographs have annotations and markings. These original prints were taken by French General Albert D'Amade (1856-1941) during his tenure as France's diplomatic representative in Tianjin. While traveling along the Yangtze River by ship, he captured the landscapes and local life of Chongqing and the southwestern reaches of the river during the late Qing Dynasty. During the late Qing period, very few photographers ventured into the upper Yangtze River and southwestern China, making this collection a rare and invaluable visual record of the region's geography, landscapes, and cultural heritage. These images provide not only a significant historical reference on the Yangtze and southwestern China but also serve as an important early photographic documentation of the region. About General Albert D'Amade (1856-1941): Albert D'Amade was a French general and diplomat who participated in the French campaign in Tunisia (1881) and later served as France's diplomatic representative in Tianjin (1887). In 1896, he accompanied Li Hongzhang on his visit to France. He was promoted to colonel in 1903 and later became a general, serving in French colonial Morocco in 1908. He passed away in 1941.
